Events 1994

The beginning of Woodend Primary School.

Reading the minutes of the Woodend Resident's Association and other correspondence between various parties shows the persistence and patience needed to get Woodend established.
Partly this is because Woodend is a unique school, part owned by both the Education Department and private companies. Supporting investors were sought for “The first privately owned school in Australia to be leased by the State Government.”  Even the original staff was given the opportunity to invest in the school, although none did. The lease was originally for 15 years with two options each for a further five years.

The school was designed by the architect Terence Feltus with the idea of future use as housing for independent aged care. In late 1994, Ms Sue Woollard was appointed as founding Principal and with the teacher-librarian, Ms Lyne George began ordering everything from pins to play grounds. On a hot day in December 1994 all six staff met at the host school, Sheidow Park Primary, to set up the three R-3 classes for the 57 enrolled pupils. The three class teachers were Ms Chris Lever (Yr2/3), Ms Jenny Cullen (R) and Ms Vicki Gregory (R/1). The school secretary and financial officer was Ms Mignonne Herriman. The first school excursion to welcome new students and their families was a walk from Sheidow Park School to the Trott Park Neighbourhood Centre for a picnic lunch.
